2008-09 NBA Finals Preview

We won’t be seeing the real-life version of the MVPuppets duking it out in the finals this year. The great debate by Vitamin Water will also go unanswered. Even one of our favorite Slam covers with Kobe and Bron face to face will be null and void. By now everyone and their moms already know the Orlando Magic have stepped up and dethroned King James and his courtyard. So for any of you Cavs fans, who were expecting to witness a potential stop to the unstoppable, it ain’t happening. At least not this year. But the good news is, like any show, the finals must go on. The Lakers are favored because if talent were steroids, this team is loaded on it. Nevertheless, the Magic are where they are because they’re entirely capable of an upset. This could be O-town’s chance to add that title to their books – and tally 1 championship to their track record, as opposed to the Lakers who’ve already got 14 thus far. Can the Lakers redeem themselves from the harrowing boot they received from the Celts in last year’s finals? The question is no longer about “can” or “can’t”, we’ve come to that apex – so who “will” be the 2008-09 champs? Lakers or Magic? Game 1 begins today, 9PM ET on ABC.

Regular Season: Orlando Won 2-0.

Dec 20: at Orlando 106, Los Angeles 103
Jan 16: at Los Angeles 103, Orlando 109

Starting 5

Point Guard (Derek Fisher v Rafer Alston)

Derek’s got experience over Rafer. And Fisher can drain some critical three’s during crunch time. But we’ve seen Rafer filling Jameer’s shoes averaging a healthy 12.7 points per game, and 4.4 assists per game this playoffs. And just like the ball, numbers don’t lie. Rafer’s contributions outweigh Fisher’s 7.1 PPG, and 2.4 APG playoff average. Rumor has it, Jameer Nelson, who has been out with a shoulder injury since February, may make an appearance in finals, adding more ammo to the Magic’s PG arsenal.
Edge: Magic

Shooting Guard (Kobe Bryant v Courtney Lee)

This almost isn’t a fair comparison, you know, like apples to oranges? Or Mercedes to Volkswagen? Sure, Lee’s improved his game to give a nice 8.8 PPG, and .451 FG%, and even Pietrus, who will tag in for Lee, is a likeable addition to the Magic team with 10.5 PPG, and a .485 FG% during playoffs. But how do you justify these numbers against the leading Laker’s 29.6 PPG? That’s just Kobe doin’ work, and we can’t imagine anything less than stellar from this guy. This year’s Kobe has been spectacular at leading the team, taking it in and drawing contact when necessary but balancing it out with valuable assists to the rest of the squad. Expect to see plenty of teeth-gritting during finals.
Edge: Lakers

Small Forward (Trevor Ariza v Hedo Turkoglu)

Excuse me while I put on my Laker goggles for just a moment. If you haven’t heard of Trevor Ariza yet, let’s dig you out from under that rock, shall we? Ariza brings that unexpected burst of energy when opponents least expect it, capitalizing on hustle plays from forced turnovers and attacks to the basket, and hitting the occasional three, he’s a whopping .500 in 3-point territory this playoffs. Compared to Hedo, who’s averaging 15.2 points, 5.1 assists, .410 FG% Ariza’s 11.4 points, 1.5 steals, and .558 FG% isn’t too shabby. Goggles off, and we all know Turkoglu’s still a major offensive threat. It’s difficult to turn someone off who is innately a shooter. Majority will go with the Magic on this one, I’m thinking both players are critical at this stage.
Edge: Even

Power Forward (Pau Gasol v Rashard Lewis)

Maybe Marc Jackson said it best when he summed his performance up as Boom-Boom Pau. Pau’s cranked up his intensity level to that umpteenth degree averaging a double-double during these playoffs. On the opposite coast, Rashard Lewis is dangerous. Rashard and Hedo will be taking turns drilling the Lakers from long distance. The lack of defense from Pau can be used to Rashard’s advantage. But the Lakers have a back-up answer to that. Lamar Odom is perfectly capable of matching up against Lewis’ style of play.
Edge: Lakers

Center (Andrew Bynum v Dwight Howard)

6’11 Dwight Howard, defensive player of the year versus 7’0 Andrew Bynum – one’s got all-star monster written all over him, the other, diminished potential. Howard clearly has the upper hand in this matchup based on reality, points, blocks, rebounding, and lesser likeliness to be in early foul trouble. But good news for the Lakers, is that they’ve got a 7’0 center who’s now healthy, and ready to support fellow big men like Gasol or Odom on the inside. And though his playoff numbers may not show it, Bynum does have the potential for greatness. Think back to when Bynum scored 42 points with 15 rebounds, well, nevermind that it was against the Clippers. The point is, Lakers do have a center who at least can match up to Dwight defensively, though we will put our money on Dwight to dominate this series.
Edge: Magic

The Bench

Mickael Pietrus, tres bien. We don’t speak French, but Pietrus is becoming synonymous with impressive on the floor. He was a key-factor in helping put a defensive stop to Bron, and we expect he’ll step up his game to help boost the Magic, regardless of whether he’s wearing a pair of Jordans or Kobe’s shoes. Au contraire, the Lakers make a call, and they’ve got instant back-up. Odom, 6’9, we mentioned will be a critical big man, depending on his contributions, he can help make and break the game. If he can weather his back issues, and still play with the same gumption as he did in the Denver series, the Magic have just one more thing to worry about. The rest of the Laker bench mob, individually might not be a lot to handle but collectively, if they all bring something to the table – Farmar’s quickness, Vujacic’s threes, Brown’s athleticism, Walton’s uh, tenacity, yes, if the Lakers bench mob is up to speed, Magic have nothing on them.

Edge: Lakers

Intangibles

Dwight’s hearty, jolly-go-lucky, good spirited attitude deserves an award for great sportsmanship. We really admire Dwight as a player and overall person. But does this care-free attitude he possesses sit almost as a disadvantage for the Magic, in terms of lacking the serious mindset and focus for someone who truly wants to fight for the ring? The Magic are new to this finals business, but Lakers have been here before. No pressure? Barack Obama picked the Lakers to win in 6. He also correctly predicted UNC as NCAA champs. The Lakers have the manpower, but do they have the passion? Is this team starving from last year after missing their so-close-but-no-cigar shot at champions then? Edge: Even

3 Questions

1) Will the current Superman use his super-powers to win Orlando’s first championship ever?
2) Will Lakers win their first championship without Shaq?
3) Doesn’t Shaq lose either way?

Prediction

To quell the criticism the Lakers receive day in and out about being able to win a championship without Shaq appears the least of Kobe’s worries. His sense of urgency rides on a number of factors, but mostly because he just wants to win again. Every series for the Lakers has been a challenge, we’ve seen them struggle against the Rockets and the Nuggets, but at the same time, we’ve seen them blow both teams out when they took care of business. Lakers have too much expectation and talent this year to not win it this time around. They’ve come knocking on the finals door again, and won’t leave until they’ve found the answer.

The Lakers and Magic matchup is actually much more challenging than it would’ve been if it were Lakers and Cavs in the finals. No one can underestimate the Magic and their raw talent. The Magic are on a crazy adrenaline rush from fighting off the Cavaliers and are already paving history. Dwight Howard has garnered attention as one of the beasts to play the game and this series will be no exception. Lakers will run into major trouble on the defensive end, as that’s been one of their weaknesses throughout the year. The Magic will shoot like no tomorrow and chances are they’ll score well. The Lakers may follow up from being down early with a good run to get back in it, the latter half of their games. The Magic may try to take the game early on to wear the Lakers down, but the Lakers should come out on top, in no more than six games. It won’t be easy for the Lakers. But the difference between last year and this one, is that the Lakers have Kobe + Gasol + Bynum + fill-in-the-blank-here, and that will be enough for Lakers to add that ring to their collection.

Lakers win 4-2

What do you think?
a) “Yea?”
b) “Nay?”
c) “Get the finals started already, I need my basketball fix!”

5,4,3,2.. and it’s good! Each game-changing shot is heard around the world and goes down in NBA history as one of the most inconceivable yet awe-inspiring shots to end the game. A stroke of luck, backed behind pure skill, down to even the tenth of a second seems to be the key formula for these guys hitting the game winner. It’s the same formula players continue to use now, with the occasional game-winning stunners as seen in the 08-09 playoffs. Take a stroll down memory lane and hit the replay on some of these classic buzzer-beaters.

Los Angeles Lakers (1) vs. Denver Nuggets (2)

Western Conference Finals

A team that’s been heralded with all the talent and skill in the world is now set to go up against a team with a new-found hunger and athleticism, one step closer to the NBA finals. The Lakers know what they have to do to get it, déjàvu from last year perhaps, and it’s only a matter of playing their A game to get past the Nuggets. This is new territory for the Nuggets as they haven’t passed the first round since ’94 and haven’t advanced to the conference finals since ‘85, but the heart they’ve put into these ’09 playoffs, yield the potential to make history and disrupt the Lakers’ pursuit for the ring they could have had last year. Can the Nuggets beat the best? Get ready for the series to watch – starts Tuesday, May 19, 2009 9:00PM EST on ESPN.

Regular Season: Los Angeles Won 3-1

Nov 1: at Nuggets 97, Lakers 104 (minus Chauncey Billups)
Nov 21: at Lakers 104, Nuggets 90
Feb 27: at Nuggets 90, Lakers 79
Apr 9: at Lakers 116, Nuggets 102

Starting 5

Point Guard (Derek Fisher v Chauncey Billups)

Both point guards have been in this game long enough to know how to handle their composure come game time. Strictly off numbers and recent performance alone, Chauncey Billups is clearly the bigger playmaker in this matchup. Big Shot Billups is on a playoff roll, averaging 22 PPG, 7APG, triple that of D Fish’s contributions.

Edge: Nuggets

Shooting Guard (Kobe Bryant v Dahntay Jones)

A look at Dahntay’s stats show he’s improved from his regular season average of 5 PPG, .458% FG to 7 PPG and .54% FG in the post season. Yet, will he be enough to stop Kobe’s reign as one of the best shooting guards in the league? Need we even ask? We’re talking Kobe Bryant here. Kobe’s mission is to lead this Laker team to victory, and if he serves his role, he will continue capitalizing on his seemingly tough shots. If we’re talking straight numbers, Kobe will continue his playoff average of 28 PPG, 4 RPG, and 4APG. Likewise, if we’re talking performance, Kobe will put on the show.

Edge: Lakers

Small Forward (Trevor Ariza v Carmelo Anthony)

While Trevor Ariza might have ignited a surprising spark to help the Lakers keep on every now and again, will he be able to bring down Carmelo Anthony? Carmelo is too great of a scorer, and impossible to shut down, especially in this playoff series. The Bron’s and Dwight’s of the world are often associated with the term, beast, and truth be told, Carmelo’s got some beast in him himself, proof when it comes to scoring. Did we mention he averaged 30 PPG in the conference semi’s? In the conference finals, we have yet to see, who will drain more, Melo or Kobe?

Edge: Nuggets

Power Forward (Pau Gasol v Kenyon Martin)

K Mart who can now move on from the drama that happened in the Mavs series, must now face Pau Gasol. While Kenyon is physically stronger than Pau Gasol, and bound to be a defensive deterrent, Pau’s more fluid and swifter on the offense. Pau’s been criticized to be a “softie” when it comes to playing his game, but still comes through and puts up numbers and boards, averaging a double-double during playoffs.

Edge: Lakers

Center (Andrew Bynum v Nene)

21-year old Andrew Bynum is an X-factor for the Lakers. If Bynum turns his game on, the Nuggets will be forced to rely on their outside shooting skills, and at the other end, the triple force from Pau, Kobe, and Bynum remains unstoppable. If, is the key word. As for Nene, he’s more consistent, a little more dapper on his feet, but still not as big of a factor as Bynum. Their numbers in the regular season match up pretty close. If Bynum’s in full effect, he gets the upper hand, but since it’s questionable whether he plays 100% each game, we’re going to go with even on this match up.

Edge: Even

The Bench

Lakers bench mob is led by Lamar Odom, who in his own right is also starter material. The rest of the LA supporting cast when on, can hold off a lead, but can also melt down when off. The Lakers bench mob will need to turn it up in order to help prevent Denver from going on their offensive runs. The Nuggets have shown their bench can be a threat, with JR beyond the arc, and the underrated Chris Andersen making his theatrical appearance.

Edge: Even

Intangibles

The hunger and motivation of these Nuggets serves as a big factor for them to defy odds and beat LA. If they’re still as hungry as they’ve displayed in the first couple series, this can throw off the Lakers and work to the Nuggets’ advantage. Don’t forget this is also Chauncey’s home team, and perhaps the AI trade was one of the best things to have ever happened to the Nuggets.

Edge: Nuggets

3 Questions

1) Will the Lakers hush their critics and play consistently well?
2) Will the Birdman take flight and help protect the Denver nest?
3) Will the young Andrew Bynum bring out his aggressive side to man the middle?

Prediction

This series is going to be a nailbiter from start to finish. Both teams are expected to play with an intensity, so say hello to more NBA drama. The key for the Lakers to stay on top, is if their big men step it up and for the entire Laker squad to conquer on the defensive end. The Lakers were easily able to douse the Nuggets during the regular season, and despite the Nuggets’ stellar performance in the first couple of series of playoffs, it will be a big challenge for them to beat LA. The Rockets series has exposed the Lakers are human afterall, and are not exempt from a beat-down. Lakers will most likely dominate on their turf, but expect some turbulence when they travel to the Mile High. Lakers in 7.

Lakers win 4-3

Cleveland Cavaliers (1) vs. Orlando Magic (3)

Eastern Conference Finals

The Cleveland Cavaliers are coming off back to back sweeps over the Detroit Pistons and Atlanta Hawks and will have 9 days of rest since their last game. LeBron James and company will be feeling antsy facing their first legitimate challenge in the Playoffs against a team with a balanced attack and the defensive player of the year. The Orlando Magic are coming off a hard fought 7 game series against the defending champion Boston Celtics, going to their first Eastern Conference finals since 1996. Game 1 starts Wednesday, 9:30 PM ET on TNT in Cleveland.

Regular Season: Magic won 2-1

Jan. 29: at Orlando 99, Cleveland 88

Mar. 17 at Cleveland 97, Orlando 93

Apr. 3 at Orlando 116, Cleveland 87

Starting 5

Point Guard (Mo Williams v. Rafer Alston)

Mo Williams has been steady all regular season and has continued in the playoffs, giving LeBron his much needed second scorer. Rafer Alston has filled in nicely for the injured Jameer Nelson, setting up his teammates and adding some scoring along the way. Rafer will need to channel his emotions and not slap the back of anyone’s head in this series. What seperates Williams from Alston each and every night is consistency, and in the playoffs, every play counts.

Edge: Cavs

Shooting Guard (Delonte West v J.J. Redick)

Delonte West gives the Cavs another ball handling guard on the court that can hit the outside shot. At only 6-3 and 180, his size can be a problem on the defensive end against taller, stronger guards. Lucky for him, Orlando’s guards are of a similar size. One uncertainty is who’s going to start for the Magic – JJ. Redick or Courtney Lee? Redick started the entire Boston series and provided another 3 point threat. Lee, who was starting, came back from a fractured sinus in Game 3 has provided a spark off the bench. Delonte has the edge here either way.

Edge: Cavs

Small Forward (LeBron James v Hedo Turkoglu)

LeBron James is averaging 33 points, 10 rebounds, and 7 assists a game in the Playoffs. There is not much more you can ask for from the Cavalier’s forward. LBJ should attack the basket and try to get some early fouls on Dwight Howard to help open up the inside of the paint and setup kick outs to his teammates at the 3 point line. Hedo Turkoglu played well in the Boston series but he’ll have his hands full trying to guard LeBron. He’ll need to make James work on both ends of the court and the Orlando Magic will have to play good team defense to contain the current MVP.

Edge: Cavs

Power Forward (Anderson Varejao v Rashard Lewis)

Anderson Varejao gives rebounds, energy and a big body down low. The versatile Rashard Lewis can shoot it from outside or take it inside depending on the matchup. In this case, he should draw Varejao outside the key and force him to guard outside the key. On defense, Lewis will need to put a body on Varejao to limit the offensive rebounds.

Edge: Magic

Center (Zydrunas Ilgauskas v Dwight Howard)

Zydrunas Ilgauskas provides a skilled big man that can take it inside and shoot it from outside. He’ll need to hit his outside shots to keep the defensive player of the year, Dwight Howard, outside of the paint. Howard will need to use his athleticism, power and speed against Big Z, beating him down the floor, blocking shots, and drawing fouls.

Edge: Magic

The Bench

If the Cleveland Cavaliers are going to win their series, they better not depend too much on their bench. In this postseason, only Joe Smith has really had any impact off their bench with smaller contributions from Wally Szcerbiak, Daniel Gibson, and Ben Wallace. The Magic bench includes Mickael Pietrus, Anthony Johnson, and Marcin Gortat. Pietrus will likely have the biggest impact, likely drawing some defensive assignments against King James. With Courtney Lee becoming more confident wearing the Rip Hamilton mask, the Magic should have an advantage when the coaches look to get their starters some rest.

Edge: Magic

Intangibles

The Magic have shown that when they play together as a team and are hitting on all cylinders, they are hard to beat. What they also showed during the Boson series was that they don’t always play as a team. Which Magic team will show up? The Cavs have some fresh legs, a great team bond, and home court advantage. Ultimately, in a 7 games series, the Cleveland intangibles outweigh Orlando’s.

Edge: Cavs

3 Questions

1) How much of an impact will the extra days of rest for the Cavs play?

2) Which will have a bigger impact – LeBron James MVP offense or Dwight Howard’s MVP defense?

3) Can the Orlando Magic steal one on the Cavs home court?

Prediction

The Orlando Magic have shown they can win on the opposing team’s court in a deciding game but the Cavs have been dominate on their home court this season. The MVP of the league is on a mission and home court advantage will play a pivotal part of the series.
Cavs win 4-3

Cleveland Cavaliers (1) vs. Atlanta Hawks (4)

Eastern Conference Semi-Finals

The Cleveland Cavs come off a series where they looked dominant, sweeping the former champion Detroit Pistons and winning by at least 11 points each game. THe Hawks come off a 7 game series that was almost the complete opposite of the Bulls and Celtics classic – filled with blowouts where each game was decided by 10 or more points and there were no lead changes after the 1st quarter. Hopefully this series will be a lot more exciting, with better matchups between both teams.

Regular Season: Cavs won 3-1

Nov. 22: at Cleveland 110, Atlanta 96

Dec. 13 at Atlanta 97, Cleveland 92

Mar. 1 Cleveland 88 at Atlanta 87

Mar. 21 at Cleveland 102, Atlanta 96

Starting 5

Point Guard (Mo Williams v. Mike Bibby)

Mo Williams had an All-Star season but his numbers in the Playoffs were down a little despite averaging more minutes. He has never been this far in the playoffs before and will have a more difficult task this series against the crafty PG veteran of the Hawks. Mike Bibby gives the Hawks a deadly shooter that is hard to stop when he is on. Williams needs to expose Bibby’s defense and mix up his outside shots with drives to the basket.

Edge: Even

Shooting Guard (Delonte West v Joe Johnson)

Delonte West gives the Cavs another ball handling guard on the court that can hit the outside shot. At only 6-3 and 180, his size can be a problem on the defensive end against taller, stronger guards. Unfortunately for West, his matchup, Joe Johnson, is just that. At 6-7 and 240 pounds, Joe Johnson is the heart of the Atlanta Hawks. He can shoot outside, drive, or post up and should have a distinct advantage over West. Expect LeBron to handle some of the defensive assignments against Johnson and vice versa.

Edge: Hawks

Small Forward (LeBron James v Maurice Evans)

Maurice Evans was given the unenviable task of guarding Dwyane Wade in the first round and will have an equally hard task in this series guarding the MVP, LeBron James. James just needs to continue doing what he has been doing all season, using his strength and speed to dominate opponents. James is averging 32 points, 11.3 rebounds, and 7.5 assists a game.

Edge: Cavs

Power Forward (Anderson Varejao v Josh Smith)

This should be an interesting matchup. Anderson Varejao won’t give you much on offensive but can be an annoyance on defense and plays well in the Cavs’ offense schemes. Josh Smith not only provides the shot blocking defense but helps energize the Hawks with his high-flying power dunks. Don’t expect Smith to try any between the leg dunks this series. He will need to hit his outside shots to get Varejao to step outside his comfort zone but can’t rely on it all series. Varejao will be looking to take charges and get Smith in early foul trouble.

Edge: Hawks

Center (Zydrunas Ilgauskas v Al Horford)

Zydrunas Ilgauskas gives the Cavs size in the middle that can hit the outside shot and rebound the ball. If Al Horford were injury free, he would have an advantage over the slower Ilgauskas. Since Horford is coming off a sprained ankle that forced him to miss a game last series, he may not be as productive in this matchup as he could be. Ilgauskas gets the edge here but only by a slight margin.

Edge: Cavs

The Bench

If round one was any indication, don’t expect the bench to have much impact for the Cavs. They rely heavily on their starters for scoring. Daniel Gibson, Joe Smith, Wally Szczerbiak and Ben Wallace will be asked to play some defense and score the occasional points. For the Hawks, their bench is clearly lead by Flip Murray. Zaza Pachulia provides energy and a big man off the bench and Marvin Williams, coming off injury, was a starter most of the season. If Williams can play at a high level, the Hawks bench has the advantage over the Cavs.

Edge: Hawks

Intangibles

When game 1 of the Cavaliers and Hawks tip off on Tuesday, the Cavs will have had 8 full days of rest for players with nagging injuries (such as Ben Wallace) and players that have had a long season (such as LeBron James who played in the Olympics). The extra days of rest means the Cavs’ starters can play some extra minutes early on in the series. The Hawks could have used a lot more rest with injuries to Al Horford and Marvin Williams. The Hawks have great playoff experience from last season’s 7 game series against the Celtics and this season’s series against the Hawks. Both teams play well on their home court. The Cavs team has a lot of team camaraderie that helps them on and off the court.

Edge: Cavs

3 Questions

1) How much of an impact will the extra days of rest for the Cavs play?

2) Can anyone stop LeBron James?

3) How will the experience the Hawks gained last year against the defending champions help them?

Prediction

Cavs come out looking rusty from all that rest but eventually find their rhythm in game 1 and show the Hawks why it’s so difficult to win in their arena. The Hawks win a game on their homecourt but are not able to do much against LeBron James.

Cavs win 4-1

Boston Celtics (2) vs. Orlando Magic (3)

Eastern Conference Semi-Finals

Point. The Orlando Magic got a few days extra rest and many of the Celtics have logged a lot of minutes, playing with some heavy legs. Counter-Point. The Celtics have a nice rhythm going and their playoff experience from last year is a bigger factor than rest. Point. The Orlando Magic have no one that can chase around Ray Allen. Counter-Point. The Celtics have no one that can match up with Rashard Lewis. What is the point? This series has a lot of interesting matchups and a lot of different factors will decide the eventual winner. Game 1 is Monday on TNT at 8pm ET. Let’s break it down.

Regular Season: Tied 2-2.

Dec. 1: at Boston 107, Orlando 88

Jan. 22 Boston 90 at Orlando 80

Mar. 8 Orlando 86 at Boston 79

Mar. 25 at Orlando 84, Boston 82

Starting 5

Point Guard (Rajon Rondo v. Rafer Alston)

The MVP of the Celtics, Rajon Rondo showed the impact he can make, finishing just shy of averging a triple double in the series against the Bulls. Rafer Alston has been a capable replacement for Jameer Nelson but will need to take better shots and get his team involved. Skip to my Lou may have the handles but Rondo has the speed and is quickly turning into a very good player in the league. He needs to get in the lane and put pressure on Alston down the court.

Edge: Celtics

Shooting Guard (Ray Allen v J.J. Redick)

Without Courtney Lee, J.J. Redick got the start for the Magic in game 6 and delivered. But the Magic will need someone who can keep up and run around screens with Ray Allen. Expect Michael Pietrius to get the bulk of the minutes. Allen showed he is deadly for 3 point range and can get his shot off anytime. If he continues his hot shooting, the Magic could be in for a long night.

Edge: Celtics

Small Forward (Paul Pierce v Hedo Turkoglu)

They can drive through the lane, post you up, or step back and hit the three. Both Paul Pierce and Hedo Turkoglu bring versatility to their respective teams. The Truth representing Inglewood. Mr. 4th Quarter representing Turkey. While Turkoglu distributes the ball a little better, Pierce is a better scorer, has a knack for drawing fouls, and is a better defender.

Edge: Celtics

Power Forward (Glen Davis v Rashard Lewis)

Big Baby Glen Davis’ has filled in nicely but he’s no KG. Contrary to popular belief, his frohawk does not give him extra aerodynamic speed. His big body mass down low may be a little tough for Rashard Lewis to guard but Lewis has a lot of length and it doesn’t hurt that the defensive player of the year is playing behind him. Not only does Turkoglu bring versatility to the Magic but Rashard does as well. Playing at power forward, he will be a matchup problem for the Celtics. The Magic will need to expose this matchup and force the Celtics to double team Lewis.

Edge: Magic

Center (Kendrick Perkins v Dwight Howard)

Kendrick Perkins gives the Celtics a respectable big man that can help alter shots and play some defense. He’ll have his hands full this series against the former slam dunk champion. Dwight Howard has lived up to his superman nickname by averaging 24 points and close to 16 rebounds a game against the Sixers in the 1st round. The Bulls did not have a low post presence, so the Magic need to go down low to Dwight early and often to see how the Celtics handle the different play. Both players will need to stay out of foul trouble for their teams to succeed.

Edge: Magic

The Bench

With no Leon Powe, the Celtics will need someone to step up besides Eddie House. Brian Scalabrine and Mikki Moore will have to fill their backup roles taking turns guarding Dwight Howard when Perkins sits. Stephon Marbury may be the wildcard for the Celtics. He has enough games under him now to know the system and could be the scoring punch off the bench that the Celtics need. For the Magic, the loss of Courtney Lee, means one less player coming off the bench. If Redick is in the starting lineup, Mickael Pietrus will be the key Magic player off the bench. He will be asked to guard Ray Allen and Paul Pierce throughout the series. Anthony Johnson and Tony Battie are serviceable backups but don’t expect either to have much impact.

Edge: Celtics

Intangibles

The Celtics have battled adversity and have the champion experience but the Magic match up well and have a better 3-point shooting team. Both teams have injured players but the Celtics’ loss of Garnett and Powe will really hurt them in this round if Perkins gets into foul trouble.

Edge: Magic

3 Questions

1) How will the 6 overtimes affect the Celtics?

2) Can Rajon Rondo continue his excellent play?

3) Will lack of playoff experience hurt Rashard Lewis and Dwight Howard?

Prediction

After 7 games and 6 overtimes and still no KG in sight, the Celtics will have another battle with a team that is confident it can win. Rashard Lewis and Dwight Howard will be tough for the Celtics to match up with. Ray Allen will provide equal problems to the Magic. The Magic will be able to steal one of the first 2 games in Boston and win the games on their home court, eliminating the defending champions out of the Eastern Conference semi finals.

Magic win 4-2

Los Angeles Lakers (1) vs. Houston Rockets (5)

Western Conference Semi-Finals

Round two, fight! Next contenders in this ring? Houston Rockets, say hello, to the Los Angeles Lakers. Now, now fellas, shake hands, and play nice! This is going to be a true test for Lakers to stay on their toes, defeat, and move on to play against even more mentally tough and inspired teams in the near future. For the Rockets, it’s an opportunity to shake the Lakers by their feet for as much change as possible. No one wants to make it easy for anyone, so this is bound to be a fun matchup to tune into. First game for the Lakers/Rockets starts up Monday May 4, 2009 10:30PM ET.

Regular Season: Los Angeles Won 4-0.

Jan. 13: at Houston 100, Los Angeles 105

Mar. 11 at Houston 96, Los Angeles 102

Apr. 3 at Los Angeles 93, Houston 81

Nov. 9 at Los Angeles 111, Houston 82

Starting 5

Point Guard (Derek Fisher v. Aaron Brooks)

Oh, D Fish, the Laker who once picked up fame for shooting a game winning shot in .4 seconds, is a veteran threat. He’s got the Lakers 3-peat championships under his belt and when it comes down to it, the guy sinks’em in. But Aaron Brooks has been one of those surprise players after joining the Rockets. Brooks has dropped an average of 15 points and 4 assists in round one, and may once again capitalize on his quickness this round.

Edge: Rockets

Shooting Guard (Kobe Bryant v Ron Artest)

While Ron casually dismissed Sager’s question whether Kobe or Lebron have been the best guys he’s ever matched up against only to reinforce his belief that in fact Brandon Roy has earned that title for him, Artest’s CD sales have skyrocketed since. Wait, we can’t prove that. But what we do know is Kobe is an undeniably stellar player even if Ron may disagree. Kobe can take the toughest shots and usually he will. He can score 40+ points when he really takes the court by storm, and on other occasions, he can sit back and let his teammates do their thing and minimize his role, as of this year. Ron may possess skill on the defensive end, but to out-perform Kobe Bryant, that’s a feat that remains to be seen.

Edge: Lakers

Small Forward (Trevor Ariza v Shane Battier)

Battie can have a good night to go 10+ points. But is he enough to step in front of perhaps the most improved Laker, Trevor Ariza? Trevor Ariza who has gone under the radar by most of the league may only have been known for his defensive attempts in the past. Trevor Ariza version 2.0, has upgraded to an all-around hustler who can also shoot from beyond the arc. Trevor is expected to outhustle Battie in this matchup.

Edge: Lakers

Power Forward (Pau Gasol v Luis Scola)

And they call Pau soft? All-around Pau can do it all, especially on the offensive end. His D could use a little work but still every once in a while he can lock it down on D if needed. Scola’s often underrated but brings up the intensity with his game. Scola’s averaged 16 points, and 6 boards this playoff season and could be motivated for more. In this case of the Spaniard vs. Argentinan, both need to go out there and prove who’s the best hombre on the floor.

Edge: Lakers

Center (Andrew Bynum v Yao Ming)

This is the Andrew Bynum Laker fans are hoping will prove the doubting Thomases wrong. The same Bynum, plagued with a sensitive knee since his injury, and the same Bynum who has been unable to unleash his inner beast thus far in the playoffs. If Bynum pulls through and actually shows up to play this next series without seeing any foul trouble, even Yao Ming’s killer efforts will be thwarted. It will be a battle on the inside but Yao’s strengths will prevail.
Edge: Rockets

The Bench

The Lakers already have a Pau-erful first five, but don’t forget Lamar Odom heads up their second unit. The Rockets, sure with guys like Carl Landry and Von Wafer, can play, but wouldn’t be surprised if the Lakers stay up thanks to help from Lamar Odom who has become another treasure in these playoffs.

Edge: Lakers

Intangibles

Universal mind control. Is Ron Ron playing mindtricks on the Lakers? As part of their strategy matching up against this Laker team who they could not hold down in the regular season, if it’s to stir up a little drama, Ron’s the man. He’ll tell it like it is, well, at least the way the world is according to Artest, and maybe he’s calling Kobe out all part of his diabolical plan? Will it backfire?
Edge: Rockets

3 Questions

1) Will Ron Artest find out that Kobe is indeed one of the best shooting guards to play against or will he stick to Brandon Roy?

2) Can Bynum channel his Bynumite to help Lakers become unstoppable the rest of this series?

3) Are the Rockets more than just another hiccup for the Lakers on the road to the finals?

Prediction

The Rockets have demonstrated their tenacity in the first few playoff games, what’s to stop them now? Well, for one thing, a stacked Laker team that knows how to build up leads, although they’ve been called out for letting their opponents make comebacks later on in the game. In the end, the Lakers know how to win since they’ve been down this road a time or two before. The forcefield created by Kobe, Pau, Bynum, and even their surprise attack players like Lamar and Ariza will do the deed. Lakers will shut down the Rockets though the Rockets won’t just stand idly by and let it happen. The rockets will fight, claw, and nail, but Lakers will hop right on through to the next round.

Lakers win 4-2

Denver Nuggets (2) vs. Dallas Mavericks (6)

Western Conference Semi-Finals

Expect the unexpected. Even though our predictions of a Denver win in round 1, we certainly did not expect the disappointing score and lack of performance from the Hornets. This was a clear indicator how hungry the Nuggets were, and quite possibly still are, as they move on to take on the Dallas Mavericks, a charged up team led by a revived Dirk Nowitzki, that easily took out the Spurs first round, 4-1. The improved Mavs proved to be a strong playoff contender with their agility on the court, ability to play defense as much as offense on the inside and outside the arc. Face off between the Nuggets and Mavericks will be a hell of a matchup – both squads are at the peak of their game, and it’s anyone’s series. Stay tuned as tip off for game 1 of the conference semi-finals series begins Sunday May 3rd.

Regular Season: Denver won 4-0.

Nov. 7: at Denver 108, Dallas 105

Dec. 15: at Dallas 88, Denver 98,

Jan. 13: at Denver 99, Dallas 97

Mar. 27: at Dallas 101, Denver 103

Starting 5

Point Guard (Chauncey Billups v. Jason Kidd)

Both Kidd and Billups have experience in the league, Kidd in his 14th, and Chauncey in his 11th. But they don’t call him Mr. Big Shot for nothing. Chauncey Billups has been a key player for Denver, he’s proved that by averaging 25 points in the first round. It really just comes down to someone who can run point by feeding his team AND pose a threat by putting up shots. Billups edges J-Kidd offensively, and will be that threat.

Edge: Nuggets

Shooting Guard (Dahntay Jones v Antoine Wright)

Upon their playoff encounters, expect Dahntay to come off strong in the defense, as he was one of the proven players to help guard and put a stop to Chris Paul in the previous round. Additionally, statistically Dahntay brings more to the offensive table than Antoine.

Edge: Nuggets

Small Forward (Carmelo Anthony v Josh Howard)

Quite possibly one of the better matchups yet, Carmelo and Josh are both aggressive on the offense and will be at each other each night. Josh Howard brought his A-game early in these playoffs to get off critical shots, becoming the third most valuable scorer on this Mavs team. If anyone is going to make or break this game, Josh Howard will be a huge factor. All-star, Carmelo Anthony is constantly attacking the basket and has averaged 21 points, 6 rebounds, and almost 6 assists the first round of playoffs. Howard will have to continue to be a scoring machine to keep up with Carmelo.
Edge: Nuggets

Power Forward (Kenyon Martin v Dirk Nowitzki)

While K-Mart will hold his own on the inside, Dirk is an all-around player to reckon with from all ends of the court. And this resurgence of energy and ability to average almost 20 points and 9 boards in the first round, emphasizes how skilled Nowitzki’s game is. If the Mavs want to win this, Dirk will be leading the way.

Edge: Mavericks

Center (Nene v Erick Dampier)

While current playoff stats show Nene and Erick Dampier to be even averaging 8 points and 8 boards per game, Nene’s intensity ranks him over Dampier. Nene will be the aggressive force inside, and his quickness will give him the advantage, easy.

Edge: Nuggets

The Bench

Talk about bench power. On one hand you’ve got J.R. Smith who is always a tremendous threat knocking down necessary shots, and Chris Andersen will surprise you with some theatrical dunks throughout the game. The other, you get outstanding sixth man of the year JET letting his reign. It might even be a showdown of three pointers, but who will be left standing? JJ Barea is another benchie to watch, he’ll be quick on his feet. The Nuggets are slightly deeper than the Mavs in terms of bench talent, and will be the bigger difference maker in this round.

Edge: Nuggets

Intangibles

Both teams have proven in their first round performances that they can defy odds and expectations and that playoffs is a whole ‘nother world from the regular season. While Mavs have shown even an underdog team can come up and run past their opponents, the Nuggets have demonstrated they can win and possibly even slaughter their esteemed opponent. But if we’re sensing a hunger, a longing, and sheer drive – the Nuggets have it. This is a chance for Chauncey to help the Nuggets bring a ring home for his hometown Denver, and he’s got that fire in his eye that’s translating into his game. You don’t have to be present at the Pepsi Center in Denver to feel it, that spirit penetrates through the TV.

Edge: Nuggets

3 Questions

1) Will Dirk still play ridiculously well enough to give Mavs another chance at defying odds of being the underdog this series?

2) Will Chauncey rightfully deserve title as Denver’s hometown hero?

3) Will Mark Cuban be a (un)happy camper at the outcome of this series?

Prediction

This is going to be a brutally competitive series, these two teams in the west have played stellar games the first round, and will undoubtedly continue that streak these next games. It’s always known defense wins championships, and though we’re still early in the playoffs, defense is still a priority and deciding factor for the way this series will turn out. The Nuggets have done an amazing job defending the Hornets, and have also shown they are able to shut the Mavs down during the regular season. Now, we’ve yet to find out whether the Nuggets will continue to bring on the defensive pressure and keep the Mavs from turning on. JR’s another piece to the Nuggets puzzle, and if he continues to shoot three’s as he has, this will help bring it in Nuggets’ favor. With Billups, Carmelo, and Nene to fend off, the Mavs have a much tougher challenge on their hands. If the Nuggets continue to lock down on D and stay on fire on the offense, they’re bound to take this series, though it will be a battle to the end.

Nuggets win 4-3
